Puerto Rico Legal Services

Founded more than sixty years ago by the American Bar Association and supported by annual grants from the American Bar Endowment, ABF is an independent, nonprofit organization that conducts large-scale research projects on the most pressing issues in the legal system in the United States and around the world. Research at ABF is conducted by a Housing Research Faculty and more than 50 affiliated scientists from across the country and around the world. Since then, we have continued to lead the way in providing more than 16,000 hours of free legal aid, the equivalent of more than $3.5 million, to more than 400 not-for-profit organizations. They have benefited from services ranging from drafting and reviewing contracts, to preparing tax exemption applications in Puerto Rico and the United States, to advising on intellectual property and employment law support. The American Bar Association is one of the largest voluntary professional organizations in the world with nearly 400,000 members and more than 3,500 facilities. It is committed to doing what only a national bar association can do: serve our members, improve the legal profession, eliminate bias and increase diversity, and promote the rule of law in the United States and around the world. The 20-member commission is made up of citizens representing the legal profession, education administration, religious community, military, business, advocacy groups representing low-income Alabamians and volunteers. The mission of the American Bar Foundation is to serve advocacy, the public, and academia through empirical research, publications, and programs that promote justice and understanding of the law and its impact on society. Our pro bono engagement has led to productive collaborations with leading foundations and nonprofits – such as United Way of Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico Community Foundation, Fundación Angel Ramos and Asesores Financieros Comunitarios – who regularly refer us to beneficiaries, affiliates and other non-profit organizations for free assistance on transactional and non-contentious legal issues.

At McConnell Valdés, we believe it is our responsibility to provide free legal services to limited-funding nonprofits that work to improve our communities and the lives of Puerto Ricans. As Lex Mundi`s exclusive law firm for Puerto Rico, we actively support and sponsor the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation, which brings together social entrepreneurs with free legal services from Lex Mundi`s global network of 160 member firms. McConnell Valdés is also a member of the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Pro Bono Institute, which supports the pro bono efforts of leading law firms, in-house legal departments, and public interest organizations in the United States and around the world. The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is the national association of more than 13,000 lawyers and law professors who practice and teach immigration law. The American Legion is a non-partisan, non-profit organization with great political influence, supported by its grassroots involvement in the legislative process, from local districts to the Capitol. The Legionnaires` sense of commitment to community, state, and nation leads to an honest plea for veterans in Washington. The Legion supports the issues that matter most to Canada`s Veteran community, supported by resolutions passed by volunteer leaders. Our national headquarters are located in Chicago and we have a large office in Washington D.C. Multicultural and multilingual staff strive to create alliances between immigrant and non-immigrant groups, including governmental, civic, social and religious communities. The ABF is the largest grantee in the National Science Foundation`s (NSF) Law and Social Sciences program, where the ABF has an 85% success rate in applications compared to an overall success rate of 21% in the social sciences and economics. ABF is a thought leader and source of research that shapes policy. We encourage all of our lawyers – as well as our summer associates – to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need by participating in our pro bono program. Each year, we proudly honour lawyers who dedicate more than 30 hours of their time to pro bono consultation by making a donation to a non-profit organization of their choice. To further demonstrate our commitment, we launched our groundbreaking pro bono program in 2006 – the first institutional program of its kind in Puerto Rico.

The American Legion was founded by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans` organization dedicated to mutual aid. It is the largest veterans` service organization in the country, dedicated to youth care and sponsorship of healthy programs in our communities, championing patriotism and honour, promoting strong national security, and continuing to dedicate itself to our comrades and veterans. In Florida and nationally, she advocates for unaccompanied immigrant children; advocates for survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence; serves as a watchdog for immigration detention practices and policies; and speaks on behalf of immigrant groups who have special and compelling demands for justice.
