(a) (1) Malt beverages may be produced by a person in his or her private home subject to the restrictions set out in this section of the Code. (2) The total quantity of malt beverages that may be produced in a private residence is (A) not more than 100 gallons in any calendar year if only one person of legal drinking age resides in that residence; or (B) not more than 200 gallons in any calendar year if two or more persons of legal drinking age live in that residence; provided, however, that not more than 50 gallons are produced in any 90-day period. Me. Comp. Laws §436.1207This Act does not apply to the following:(b) Beer, wine, mead, honey-based beer or cider of alcoholic strength produced on the premises by the owner or lessee of such premises, provided that such premises are used and used by such owner or lessee as a dwelling and that beer, wine, mead, beer or cider made from honey is intended for family use and personal consumption. (c) A gift to an individual for non-commercial use or consumption of not more than 20 gallons of beer, wine, mead, honey-based beer or cider produced in the circumstances described in paragraph (b). This Division does not permit a person under 21 years of age to possess, receive or give as gifts beer, wine, mead, honey beer or cider produced in the circumstances referred to in paragraph (b). In Canada, it is legal to manufacture mead in many Canadian provinces. Alcohol laws are regulated by the provinces, while the federal government has laws governing the taxation and importation of beer, wine and other spirits.
If you have a license, you can distill with a government (provincial) permit. If you`re staying in the United States, it`s legal to make mead at home. Mead is not distilled, so it is not subject to federal distilled spirits legislation. It is regulated only by state law. Self-brewing of non-distilled alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, mead, etc.) is very legal in many places in the United States. You will find a booming industry and a network of retailers. You can also go to the homebrew shop and buy a kit that includes everything you need to make a gallon of mead or beer in the US. Although in places like North Alaska, you are not allowed to buy much to brew beer at home.
But in the United States, anyone of legal drinking age is also legally allowed to consume alcohol. However, there are caveats to this. Unlicensed home brewers are legally limited to producing 200 gallons of finished products per year and are not allowed to sell or exchange their alcohol for cash by exchanging it for goods or services. But you are free to give someone a bottle or share it with friends. Until 2013, Alabama and Mississippi were the only states to have laws banning home brewing. But in 2013, both legalized home brewing in their 2013 legislative mandates. Although all state governments have legalized home brewing, some states retain local options that allow local governments to make home brewing illegal under municipal law. Alaska is one of those states where the local option is currently exercised.
Melovino, the state`s only commercial mead plant, opened just over a year ago and has already won 19 awards, including a gold medal in March at the Mazer Cup International, a premier Met competition in Colorado. (e) It is unlawful for a person under the age of 21 to attempt to purchase, consume, possess or transport beer, mead, cider or table wine for personal use. The curiosity of the participants during the last session was great. Hands tugged into the cool production room, with its nine massive barrels of diluted and fermenting honey stainless steel, as visitors asked about topics such as the alcohol content of mead (typically 12-14%, as with many wines); if it can age (yes, Moutela replied, „but like a $4 bottle of red wine, you can`t keep it for 20 years and expect it to be great if it`s not good”); and if it is still sweet because it is made from honey (no; Mead, like wines, can be dry). The Farm Meadery licence may be issued to owners of an agricultural brewery, agricultural vineyard and agricultural distiller`s licence for use on the existing premises of these licence holders. In addition, the farm licence, which covers premises adjacent to those belonging to an agricultural brewery, winery or agricultural distiller`s licence, may share and use the same tasting rooms to conduct tastings that the permit holder is otherwise entitled to conduct. Laws §436.2027(3) Nothing in this section prohibits any of the following:(d) A microbrewery, brewery or local licensee authorizes the sampling and consumption of beer, wine, mead, honey beer or cider produced by one or more home brewers at a brewers` meeting or a club composed primarily of home brewers on licensed premises; in the following circumstances:(i) the sampling or consumption is intended for exhibitions or competitions in which home brewers participate. (ii) Beer, honey-based beer or cider shall be served in portions not exceeding three ounces. Wine or mead is served in portions that do not exceed two ounces. (iii) The beer, wine, mead, honey beer or cider produced by the home brewer shall be consumed solely by the home brewer, his/her family, a club member, a judge or guest speaker and shall not be sold to members of the public. (iv) Participants in sampling or consumption must otherwise comply with applicable state and federal laws and applicable legislation of this Act, as well as regulations issued by the Commission under this Act. (v) Sampling or consumption participants are not charged for sampling or consumption of beer, wine, mead, honey beer or cider.
