The Pittsburgh Pro Bono Partnership is a collaboration between legal departments, law firms, the Allegheny County Bar Foundation and the Neighborhood Legal Services Association.
Its goal is to increase pro bono legal services from lawyers and paralegals for the Pittsburgh community as a whole. Many legal aid offices may be able to resolve other issues such as immigration, consumers and persons with disabilities. Some legal aid centres focus on an area of law, such as disability law or housing law. Some legal aid offices receive funding from the government, which may limit the type of cases they can accept. Legal guardianship may be established for an adult who, due to a mental and/or physical condition, is unable to care for himself, manage financial affairs and/or make or communicate responsible decisions about health care, personal hygiene or activities of daily living. Each of the lawyers participating in the programme has received specific training on how to handle these sensitive and personal cases. I do not have legal immigration status. Can legal aid help me? Each legal aid agency has its own rules about who is eligible for its services. However, if you are a victim of violent crime or domestic violence, legal aid can certainly help protect you from domestic violence or abuse, even if you do not have legal immigration status. Legal aid in civil matters does not deal with cases of pecuniary damage, such as medical malpractice, car accidents or traffic offences or criminal cases. What can I expect from a lawyer? Legal aid lawyers have the same qualifications as other lawyers. Everything you tell your lawyer is confidential, which means it will not be shared with anyone outside the legal aid office. Pro bono programs match low-income clients with pro bono lawyers who agree to take on their cases free of charge. Pietragallo attorneys and staff provide qualified family legal services to guide the family through the legal process of filing an application for guardianship and filing that petition with the Orphans Division of the Allegheny County Common Plea Court. In collaboration with the Neighborhood Legal Services Association, families in need of legal advice are identified at the firm and provided with free legal representation.
